Bobby Johnson Retires as Football Coach of the Vanderbilt Commodores

Today, Bobby Johnson proclaimed his retirement after serving as the head coach of the football team at Vanderbilt for 8 years. His overall record was 29-66. This equates to a 0.305 winning percentage certainly no great achievement by most standards. This raises the question if Johnson received inside pressure to resign after the team's 2-10 overall record and 0-8 record in the SEC last season. However, Bobby Johnson made it clear in the press conference that he was not resigning, but retiring as he and his wife felt it was the right thing to do.

Despite his lackluster record, Johnson appeared to be beloved by most at Vanderbilt. Vice Chancellor David Williams stated that Johnson's announcement came as a complete surprise. Williams went on to say that he tried talking Johnson out of retirement multiple times, but with no success.

Some of Bobby Johnson's notable achievements during his tenure at Vanderbilt included leading the football team to their first winning season since 1982 with a victory at the 2008 Music City Bowl and snapping a 22 game losing streak to rival Tennessee in 2005.
